Group Test: Firefox 3 vs IE 7 vs Safari 3.1

By Staff Writers, 5/21/2008 5:09:32 PM

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 is the leading web browser, but the fresh-outta-beta Firefox 3 and Apple’s Safari 3.1 are gunning for its crown, each claiming new speed records. So which is the fastest? We fired up all three to find out

A few short years ago the browser war seemed dead and buried. After Microsoft’s Internet Explorer usurped Netscape’s Navigator in the late 1990s, it’s domination of the Internet seemed complete, over 95 percent of us using a version of IE.

Those days are gone. The guts of Navigator were reborn in 2004 as Firefox, a browser that has been drinking more and more of IE’s milkshake ever since. Firefox now owns at least 18 percent of the market, with some estimates giving it more than a quarter.

More recently, Apple has threatened to start a three-way fight, using the software updater included with iTunes to slip its Safari browser onto PCs. While its market share is miniscule – less than one per cent among PC users and around three per cent overall –Safari offers a PC users a credible third choice.

Meanwhile, IE 7 is groaning under the weight of bad press, criticised for its instability and sluggish performance. Apple is trumpeting Safari 3.1 as the world’s fastest browser, while Firefox 3 – which is now out of beta and into the Release Candidate stage – is claimed to be over twice as speedy as its predecessor.

PERFORMANCE

To get a perspective on how the browsers perform in the real world, we stepped away from our highly-specced Vista desktop and ran all our tests on a more typical office machine, a laptop running Windows XP on a 1.73GHz Pentium M chip with 1GB of RAM.

Why are you not reviewing Opera? It remains arguably the fastest and most web standards compliant of all browsers.

Still wouldn't touch Safari if you paid me. They have a wopping 0.7% market share and they got 0.5% of that by shoving it in as part of their software update package in Windows on unsuspecting users.

I think another consideration that needs be considered with Safari is its dreadfully long start-up times. I am often left wondering whether I did indeed click on the icon to load it, on par with its iTunes load times too. Another thing I hate about Safari is its arcane look and feel, Apple - dump this on Windows and make it look like its a windows app. It's definitely Firefox 3 for me, IE7 is slow on all but its startup time. Only thing that craps me about FF is every update they make the damned plug-ins have to be updated to incorporate support for the new browser - very annoying.

Why would you not include Opera in this test? bollocks!

It's mostly because nobody seriously cares about opera.

"Meanwhile, IE 7 is groaning under the weight of bad press, criticised for its instability and sluggish performance." Perhaps in your own world, otherwise do you have a source for this? "Apple is trumpeting Safari 3.1 as the world’s fastest browser, while Firefox 3 – which is now out of beta and into the Release Candidate stage – is claimed to be over twice as speedy as its predecessor." Another flaw that means the results of this so-called test can be thrown out the window. You use the version of a browser that is not even final, yet the others are?

The RC1 of Firefox will be the final version so long as there are no major bugs before June.

The video load can be an interesting probe. The graph show Firefox in medium position. Is this correct?

I don't see this fact. My comment is over this post http://foro.elhacker.net/noticias/firefox_3_rc1_gana_a_ie7_y_a_safari_31-t213607.0.html

even though i been using Firefox as my main browser prior to the v1.0 days and it's my browser of choice as it's all i use. they SHOULD have included Opera as on a 'serious level' there's pretty much only FF/IE/Opera when it comes to 'real' browsers.

Downloaded RC1 Firefox the other day. So, so good. Explorer can bite me. Opera would have been a good inclusion in the test but these are the main three browsers I guess so if you want to keep it to three I'm glad it was O that got the chop. It used have so much promise but the uptake just wasn't there for some reason.

What the reviewer failed to mention was how shockingly badly Safari for windows is designed. Not only is its UI immensly sluggish, its font rendering looks absolutely awful. As an Opera user, I find it annoying that nobody gives it a chance in any reviews, as it is a genuine match for Firefox in terms of speed and functionality.

Looks like Opera 9.27 is still way ahead of this three. The problem is most review sites don´t even know this excellent browser exist.

Safari sluggish on Windows? I'm a user and reckon it's OK. I use Firefox more but when I use Safari I don't find it sluggish at all.

Everyone who uses an alternative browser to IE has to fall back on it sometimes because everyone designs their pages for it. However I have been using Opera for 3+ years now and its better than everything else in 98% of cases.

Another Opera user here. I switched to opera four years ago and IMO, it is the best and fastest out there. Too bad, a ignorant reviewers fail to acknowledge that such a great product exist!

Glad to see Firefox came out on top. I'm tired of the IE series, it does nothing and promises everything. Dunno what all the fuss is about RE Opera though. I've tried it but can't stand the thing. It seems like most people here love it, but how come it has such a low uptake?

Opera certainly had to be included in this benchmark. More people are using it than Safari for windows. Almost a year since I switched to Opera from Firefox 2 as my main browser. Main reason to switch from Firefox 2 was speed load and memory usage. Firefox 2 eats about 400MB of RAM with my usual number of tabs. Opera is much faster in every thing. I use to open +10 tabs with and never close them (when i reopen the browser, they show up again). Still use Firefox 2 because of its irreplaceable plugins. Even some times I use IE 7 (even quicker start time)

By the way, the graph image is way too small. It's unreadable. Tell us more about how you conducted the test. Did you reload the pages trough the Internet, or locally, did the server had absolutely the same load?

FF3 memory usage (or lack thereof) is very impressive, i have 50 tabs open and sitting at 150mb ram. the fact that the browser can be extended so easily with extensions and skinned makes it a very easy first choice. did i mention standards compliance and speed? Opera 9.5 is also really good, just not enough developer addons for it to be really useful for me, but everyday use for the average person it is very good indeed. WebKit is impressive (other than font rendering) yuck!, but Safari blows, it is perhaps dare i say worse than IE.

What a pitty you did not included Opera 9.27 or even better 9.50 in your review. Would be nice to see how it performs against Safari (probably better).

Just Safari 3.1.1 With Latest Webkit . More Power , More Speed , More ...
5/26/2008 2:31:57 PM

Marius
Safari 3.1.1 is the fastest browser out there (if you are using latest WebKit you'll get extra horse power).

How about the IE8 beta?

Most people also forgot that Opera can run WAY FAST on a 1.0 GHz CPU with little ram. And that's a big part of South America and Asia. That's a demographic that both Firefox and Safari will never get.

Any comparision that omits Opera is worthless. After trying all of them, Opera is notonly the fastest, the most secure and fully featured out the box, it's also the coolest.

Opera, what else ?

Dont ever bother with review like this one. Safari chosen over Opera come on. More people use Opera that Safari. It should have been in there unless you didnt wanna make Firefox3 look bad that would explain why it was ommited. Opera is still the best IMO. Firefox is becoming more like IE too may holes...

I have seen stupid ranking in the past but this one wins the award ... First of all you didn't include IE8 beta and secondly you are only considering speed for your ranking ... But what should really matter to users is the web browser security don't you think ?

I never tried opera before, i haven't even heard about it until a couple weeks ago. I just got Firefox 3, and I love it. Its definitely the best browser out there.

Why not test the browsers also by normal average people, and ask their feedback after using the browsers?
