Fatman iTube ValveDock with Speakers

By Damien Virulhapan, 5/20/2008 5:45:51 PM

Valve based amplifiers have always sat high within the realm of audiophiles, but Fatman have managed to bring valve amplifiers to a more mainstream audience in its iTube ValveDock by adding an iPod dock.

The first things that strike you when you set your eyes on a powered up iTube are the three valves that emit a peaceful glow. Unfortunately the full effect is obscured as a black cage is installed around the valves to protect it from kids.

Specs-wise, the iTube features a 2x13W power output, 20Hz-20KHz frequency response, an input impedance of 100 Ohm and an output impedance rated at 4 Ohm and 8 Ohm. The iPod dock is compatible with all iPods apart from the Shuffle range.

The amplifier and accompanying iPod dock sit separately and are coated in chrome with black sides which gives it a quality look and a very solid feel. Similarly, the speakers are finished in classic piano black gloss. To ward off fingerprint marks and unwanted smudges, Fatman have included a white glove and a brush. Also included are all the audio cables needed to get the amplifier up and running.

The included remote control, for use with the iPod dock, takes design cues from the 5G iPod and features a plastic white cover and plastic chrome backing. Unlike most other dock remotes, the iTube's remote allows you to not only skip tracks, but also controls the albums and playlists on your iPod without having to get off your couch. Unfortunately, the remote does not match the amplifier's build quality and feels very cheap when in use, giving the impression that it won't last as long as the amplifier itself. Bass and treble of the iPod dock can also be controlled via the remote, but like most valve amplifiers on the market, there is no option on the amplifier itself to adjust these settings.
