D-Link DSM-330 HD Media Player

By Damien Virulhapan, 5/15/2008 4:31:07 PM

D-Link’s DSM-330 is a streaming media player based on the DivX Connected platform, which offers DivX video streaming from the Internet to your TV and allows you to display 720P DivX videos, music and photos from your PC.

Streaming is achieved from your router wirelessly via 802.11b/g, or by good ol' Ethernet. The DSM-330 supports almost all TVs currently on the market with its wide variety of connection options including HDMI, composite A/V, S-Video and SCART. Audio connectivity on the DSM-330 is provided by RCA, optical and S/DPIF out connections.  There is a USB port located on the front of the unit, although sadly content cannot be played directly from USB devices. We’re really hoping that this can be changed by a software update sometime down the track.

D-Link were also nice enough to throw in HDMI, composite A/V, SCART and network cables so that you can get up and running straight away.

For video playback the DSM-330 supports DivX, so if you have your videos in any other format, such as WMV, they will need to be converted to DivX with the included software before they can be played. Musically, only MP3 and WMA are supported, so those with uncompressed music files will either have to encode or look elsewhere. Photos that are in JPEG or BMP format can be displayed on your TV

Since DivX Connected is open source based, there are many additional plug-ins in development that expand the functionality of the DSM-330, so it’s best to keep searching on the Internet every now and then.

Once you've installed the software on your PC and hooked up the player to your TV, setting up the player is a breeze. Some may even find that they’ll be able to set it up correctly without having to read any documentation. Once the DSM-330 is up and running it automatically lists the wireless networks in range and selects the optimal settings based on your TV.
