Analysis: Is it game over for Windows Vista?

By Damian Francis, 5/22/2008 4:14:46 PM

The saviour that was meant to be, Vista Service Pack 1, isn’t. In some cases it’s actually a performance decrease for an operating system already grinding up-to-date PCs to a halt. XP fans (for the most part) are happily using Service Pack 3, and Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb) is barking at the gates (or should that be Gates?), ready for an early release in Q3 2009. Windows Vista never stood a chance.

Not much has gone right for Microsoft’s fledgling OS. First it was delayed over three years (initially it was meant to be a stopgap between XP and 7, but then turned into a fully fledged OS), then stories of incompatible software and drivers surfaced. Most recently Vista Service Pack 1 was pulled from Automatic Download. Now that it’s back up and running it could very well be the one and only service pack ever released for the struggling OS.

Microsoft has shot itself in the foot in two ways with regards to Vista. Firstly, it went ahead with the release of Service Pack 3 for the hugely popular Windows XP. Secondly, its progress on Windows 7 and its potential release ahead of schedule has been extensively covered by the media. What this means is that consumers who were reluctant to switch from a perfectly reliable XP SP2 to Vista now have no reason to. They have a fresh upgrade in SP3 that should be able to see them through the roughly 1.5 years until Windows 7 hits shelves.

No matter what kind of reluctant computer user you are, swapping to Vista just doesn’t make sense anymore. There are a few different perspectives you can look at it from. It’s hard to come up with reasons for broad groups of computer users, like gamers, business users and home users to migrate to Vista as well.

Gamers especially should be running for the hills whenever they hear the word Vista. Yes, it’s the only way you can get DirectX 10, but is that really a big enough carrot to dangle in front of gamers? Not by a long shot. While DirectX 10 delivers a significant improvement in graphics, Vista provides a significant drop off in performance, even with SP1. In fact, it’s been proven that installing SP1 could actually make your PC slower. What’s more, over a year after Vista was released, there still isn’t a compelling enough library of games that make good enough use of DirectX 10 to justify the upgrade (around 20 only if

I have Windows Vista and it dos what it is meant to do, but it can be bloody slow sometimes, even though I have 2GB of ram. In hindsight I should have stuck with XP because I game more than I work ;)

I'm running Vista and I like it. It might not be the greatest invention in the world but its solid enough. If its 2 slow for u just buy more specs

I use Vista since Beta 1, as I did with XP. I have to say it take some getting used to, but once you get it, there is no reason to go back. Vista IS easier to use, has more features and is more secure, no matter what the pundits may want you to believe. It is easy to jump on the Vista critic band wagon, it's another thing to help the computing community with ways around problems, provide hacks etc, untill everyone finally get it that Vista is here to stay. From a developer's point of view it is 10 times more interesting to write for without worrying about your code, once you know the architecture.

I run a small business an I won't switch to Vista for one simple reason. Cost. If I have to upgrade again in a year and a half, what the hell is the point>? I can't aford to do that. If Vista was goinfg to be THE OS for the next four or five years I would change.

After about a month using Windows Vista I had it enough. This thing is worse then Windows ME was. I'm now back to Windows XP SP3 and it works so much better in almost any way. To throw away more money for hardware upgrade just to do the same or less with Vista is plain stupid. Now I'm also taking a serious at the free and open source Linux (Mandriva and Kubuntu). It looks like this is the direction I will take in the future. They both bring a lot of software and more features, even the 3D desktop looks better then in Vista and at the same time it works just as fast as Windows XP. The only problem is if you still depend on games. Otherwise be sure to check out one of the Linuxes.

Got Windows Vista with my new PC. Works fine, would rather XP though, but the PC is fast enough to cope with Vista so is fine

It works just fine with 2 gigs of ram and a core 2 duo cpu. The 64 bit Vista with 2 gigs or more is faster than XP!

Vista works, no questions. It might not be the best OS ever but it does the job. I don't think that's the major issue though, it's that Microsoft keep supporting XP and telling tales about 7, giving Vista no hope to stand on its own feet.

My next computer is going to be a Mac, I run a small business and don't play games. Too many issues with Vista, I'm over it.

The press should stop giving Vista a hard time. Its really good and does the job well. I have a Core 2 Duo E6850 and 4 GB RAM and I don't notice any performance drops. It also works fine on my laptop, even with just 1 GB of RAM.
