Q&A with Scott Richards
By Damien Virulhapan, 27/6/2008 5:52:51

Recently in Sydney to launch Antec’s latest Veris range of multimedia bay drives with iMON software, gadget zone had the opportunity to sit down for a short chat with Scott Richards, the senior vice president of Antec on its future plans for world domination

What were Antec’s main reasons for moving into consumer electronics hardware?

Two primarily, one is purely business, companies have to grow. You can’t keep re-selling the next iteration of the P18x computer case to the same group of people. And of course, we’re always promoting the whole idea of PC gaming and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) market and trying to expand that.

But again, you have to find new areas, and they have to be logical areas that you can grow in. You can’t go from being a case company to being a yoghurt manufacturer. It has to be a logical extension of your business for it to be credible.

So we thought with the success we’ve seen with other various products such as the Fusion [home theatre computer case] and MX-1 hard drive enclosure, that this [Veris multimedia products] was the logical way to go. It’s easy for people to install, just as long as you have the right video card.

Is Antec looking at getting deeper into mainstream consumer electronics?

At Antec, we look at the DIY market as being part of consumer electronics. While we have niche products, we’re also selling our products in retail stores that also sell TVs and refrigerators. We think obviously it’s a potentially huge market. For example, we’ve already had interest from the major retailers in the world such as Dixons Store Group in the UK and Best Buy in the US for the Veris multimedia products.
