MSI Wind netbook

By Damien Virulhapan, 20/6/2008 5:03:49

The MSI Wind is the first sub-notebook to hit the Australian market with Intel's Atom processor inside, but sometimes being first is not a guarantee for success.

The MSI Wind is the first in a new wave of sub-notebooks that feature Intel’s eagerly anticipated Atom processor as well as a 10-inch LCD TFT screen. Pearl white is becoming the fashionable colour for sub-notebooks and the Wind continues this trend while also adding black and pink to the mix.

After firing up the Wind for a test run we noticed that the screen would wobble while being used and only got worse when used on public transport. MSI has also gone a little overboard with its status indicators, with a grand total of eight positioned all in one neat row to the right of the trackpad. These lights indicate everything from wireless connectivity to caps lock, and do take a little time to get the hang of.

Typing on the Wind was a breeze as we were able to touch type on the keyboard thanks to the generous keys. MSI has found the right balance between keeping the keys a respectable size while not making the Wind itself larger than it should be. One little niggle is that the ‘Fn’ button has been placed where the left ‘Ctrl‘ button would normally sit, with the ‘Ctrl’ shifted one spot to the right. Because of this, we constantly found ourselves pressing ‘Fn’ instead of ‘Ctrl’.

Unfortunately the good design of the keyboard does not continue onto the trackpad and button combo. The square shaped trackpad is too small considering the 10-inches of screen real estate that you have to cover with the cursor. The mouse button takes the form of a single button with a rocking design for left and right buttons. The problem is that it's way too thin, and as a result, makes it hard to use the buttons quickly while typing.

interesting that MSI are shooting themselves in the foot with the pricing and the battery issue, they originally stated that 6 cell was standard for the XP model. I guess that changed with the LG factory fire. Anyways interesting review.

The initial batch of Wind umpc's will carry a 3-cell battery, indeed due to shortages after the LG factory fire, but as far as we know, the standard battery will be 6-cell. Anyway, thank you for the review :) And I've actually got a question about the balance problem. At what angle do you have the screen when it tips over? Cheers, Solinx

Everything I have read says that the price will be $499.00 USD. Where does the $700.00 come from? msiwind.net has a q/a that confirms the $499.00 USD price.

I believe the 700 is in AUD. It is common for electronic item to be price higher than in USA.

Yep, Khairul, you're right. This is an Aussie website so all prices unless otherwise stated are in AUD.

News of the $700 price tag has really put me off. With the Aussie dollar buying around U$0.95 and understanding that things in Australia typically cost more than a straight conversion from $US to $AU would suggest, I was hoping/willing to pay up to $600. The extra $100 really is just a slap in the face. I suppose I'll just have to hope for a price drop in the near future or start looking for alternatives.

You got a bad Wind to review. Every other review has been very positive, and you're the only ones to have any problem with the screen hinge. Also no other reviewer had Vista on their review Wind, so I really think you got something second-hand or some hastily built pre-factory job. Also, too bad Australia's price is so high. I don't understand why, but that's sad. It's $200 less for the USA.

wind pre installed with vista is e definite no go. this device is not the one to test. AUD price is only a problem for aussies, the review is read worldwide and wind watchers benefit from reviews all over the world

@Cam Seriously, the Aussie mark-up on technology is completely ridiculous. Rather than buying it in Aus... With a friend in the states, you should be able to ship over a $500 Wind, and then pick up a standard clover powercable at DSE - and still save money.
