Now that the format war is over, LG has decided to release an external Blu-ray writer that also supports playback of HD DVD discs…obviously!?
LG's BE06 is encased in a solid white and black enclosure with a design that's more suited to the living room rather than the study. A vertical stand is included if you happen to be tight on space with a blue light underneath the drive tray to indicate when the drive is in use. The BE06 is also light enough to take around with you for burning on the go, just as long as you can find a power point.
A USB port is located at the rear of the unit for connectivity, along with the DC in for power. It would have been nice to see the BE06 with Firewire and eSATA ports for faster file transfers than USB, but sadly you’ll have to do without. The eject button located at the front of drive is touch sensitive so that wear and tear on the button is reduced.
The system requirements for the BE06 to playback Blu-ray and HD DVD content are quite high and LG recommends an Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6300 or above and at least an NVIDIA 7800GTX or AMD X1950 graphics card with HDCP compliance for copyrighted material. LG have included a utility to check for compatibility if you’re unsure if your system is up to the challenge. Although that doesn't help if you've already bought the unit, so checking for compatibility before you purchase the BE06 is strongly recommended.
LG have also bundled a full software suite from Cyberlink with various applications that allow you to view Blu-ray movies, author hi-definition content and burn or backup to Blu-ray media. With blank Blu-ray media still expensive, at around the $35 mark per disc, we recommend you choose what you burn carefully. One disc is included with the burner.
