ASUS P750 smartphone

Prefer features over fashion? If so, the ASUS P750 has your name all over it. It's a boxy smartphone that's more than a little thick around the waistline, but it's got everything a road warrior needs – including tri-band GSM, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, and GPS – to make a busy day easier.

Like other mobiles in the ASUS stable, the P750 runs the Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system, and as such comes with all the standard Microsoft applications like Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Office Mobile and Windows Live Messenger. It's also fully equipped for push email synchronisation with an Exchange 2003 SP2 (or greater) mail server, and supports POP3 and IMAP4 email accounts, HTML email and most attachment types.

ASUS has also thrown a lot of its own software into the mix. If you find the standard Windows Mobile interface too clunky, the ASUS Launcher is a better alternative, with programs arranged in a grid and grouped into sensible categories like Internet, Office, Play and Files. Other programs include Travelog GPS for keeping track of your journeys, Meeting Time Planner for organising meetings across different time zones, and WorldCard Mobile for scanning business cards into your contacts.

ASUS has also filled a lot of the functionality gaps in Windows Mobile by adding a Profiles utility, Ring Tones application (for settings MP3, WMA and AAC files as ringtones), and Auto Cleaner to shut down programs when you press the close button.

For GPS, the P750 uses the same ASUS Go software found in ASUS' standalone portable navigation devices. It's not the most intuitive program we've used – with options and settings spread out across different parts of the program rather than grouped together in one place – but it doesn't lack features. Phone numbers for most of the points of interest are included so you can call them directly from the application, however there's no option for using addresses from people in your Contacts. Acquiring a satellite lock for the first time takes 15 minutes, but for subsequent use it only takes a couple of seconds to find the necessary GPS satellites.
