Samsung SGH-U900T

In the post-iPhone 3G era, it’s gotten harder to differentiate a phone as special or unique. Yet the Samsung Soul U900 – the latest in the company’s premium range of slider phones – has a few tricks up its sleeve to separate it from the rest of the pack.

Design-wise, the U900 falls into the fashion phone category, with a sleek profile, classy brushed metal veneer and black trim along the edges. The spring-loaded slider is smooth and well-constructed, revealing a laser-etched keypad similar to the ones found on Motorola’s RAZR line of phones. It’s not as comfortable though – as the keypad area is shorter and narrower, there isn’t as much room to move between each key.

Sitting between the soft keys and call buttons on the front is what Samsung refers to as a ‘smart adaptive touch window’, an innovation that won the company an IF Design Award in 2007. This essentially replaces the traditional five-way navigation button that most phones use with virtual buttons that change depending on the screen you’re on. Most of the time, it presents the standard arrow keys, but within specialised applications like the music player, it shows buttons specific to the program (in this case playback controls). Samsung has also incorporated haptic feedback so you feel a slight buzz when pressing the virtual buttons.

The adaptive touch window is a cool feature that works well for the most part, but it’s still inferior to a mechanical navigation pad – especially when you’re scrolling through a list of items quickly, as it’s marginally slower than tactile arrow keys.

As far as features go, the U900 is a mixed bag of entry-level and high-end. Bundled applications are the standard fare of PIM, multimedia, games and web, but it’s also one of the few mobiles to support 7.2Mbps HSDPA – a feature that’s wasted on the U900’s simple WAP browser. The faster Internet access is ideal for streaming video from Foxtel Mobile and BigPond TV on the Telstra-branded U900, but given the video feed is optimised for slower 3G speeds, we didn’t notice any difference in quality.

I got this phone recently and although I like it as a whole, the software leaves a bit to be desired. I was used to Symbian on my old Nokia where you could customise things and use help menu's, this doesn't have those. Also, and I blame Telstra for this, parts of the software have been hobbled or removed. On silent mode it still plays sounds, camera shutters etc at full volume. I contacted Samsung and they walked me through the settings to turn it off, only to find that the "Turn Sound Off" check box was missing. Talk to Telstra they said. I contacted them and they handballed me to another dept., and on and on... Anyway, if you have used Samsung before and know what you're getting into or don't mind a few restrictions in software then this is a good phone.

I can confirm the sound effect issue Dave describes. My brother has this phone, and the camera shutter sounds cannot be turned off.

I have only had this phone a few days so still have some playing to do, but i can't seem to turn the volume up loud enough to be able to hear the person on the other end during a phone call. It's fine if i am in the office or at home but if there is background noise (say shopping centre) i cant hear a thing. Hoping there is some funny setting i can play with to fix this. Also i cannot get the softwear to load on my computer properly so i downloaded it instead but now my ophone wont connect. Will see what happens here...

This works to increase volume. There are more direct codes, but this is all I could find ATM. I only set mine at 4, not 6 as said below and it seems fine to me. Anything over 6 distorts apartently. From: http://www.samrathacks.com/2008/05/samsung-u900-soul-3g.html - Type *#0002*28346#. - It will bring up a menu. - Load Params. - Dump Params. - Call Config. - Press Back & it will bring up another longer menu. - Key in 3 to bring up SPK Config Menu. - Then key in 4 to bring up have-QTune (MP3) menu. - Key in 1 to bring up SPK MP3 Vol. Menu. - Key in 6 to change the max. Volume. - Input 40 & press OK, it will change to 4.0db default max. Volume is 3db. I wouldn't recommend higher than 6.0db because the sound will distort, anything lower will be fine. - Once done, press cancel to close the service menu & try to play a MP3 with max. Volume. This volume apply for your MP3 Ringtones & Message tones.

This site is better, it has all the codes and tells you where to be careful with changes - http://blackrabbit2999.blogspot.com/2008/05/samsung-soul-u900.html
