Xbox 360 hits back with huge sales

By Damian Francis, 5/15/2008 8:13:21 AM

Microsoft last night announced that sales of the Xbox 360 had reached the 10 million mark, hitting back after Sony claimed they were in the driver's seat in terms of momentum after the release of GTA IV.

The Xbox 360 has hit sales figures of over 10 million, ahead of Nintendo‘s Wii on 8.8 million and Sony’s PS3 on 4.1 million, reports Reuters after viewing research firm NDP’s statistic reports. It’s a welcome statistic for Microsoft’s current gaming console after its red ring of death issues and following reports that Sony is making a blazing come back. Membership to the Xbox Live service has also reportedly hit more than 12 million.

According to Don Mattrick, a Microsoft senior vice president, the news points to the Xbox 360 winning the console war between the Wii and PS3. "History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle," he said.

What Microsoft didn’t mention though was that the Xbox 360 had a miassive head start on its competitors. Call it good planning or a rush job (in light of the technical issues that have been plaguing the Xbox 360), the fact is the console has been on sale since the start of 2006 in Australia, while the PS3 didn’t hit shelves until March  2007. The Wii didn’t start it’s assault until December 2006 but is already drawing close to knocking off the Xbox 360.
