Skype out to prove a point

By Damian Francis, 5/6/2008 9:05:16 AM

No one denies that Skype is a great idea and a pretty damn good service. But people aren’t rushing to throw away their mobiles and landlines to replace them with Skype just yet. So to prove that Skype really is a match for the phones we’re all used to, they’ve got a trick up their sleeve.

The answer to getting the word out about Skype is to send a human being to 15 countries over 33 days with the rule being that she can’t stay still at any time, even when sleeping. That poor soul is writer Rebecca Campbell, who has already started her voyage and is blogging using Skype as we speak (last time from a lavatory on a flight to Singapore).

Campbell will be using as many forms of transport as she can and crossing differing terrains to prove that Skype can now be used anywhere on the move. She’ll be equipped with a variety of Skype-enabled gadgets from a 3 Skypephone to the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, and will be documenting her travels on her Skype blog. With technology being so far reaching in the 21st century, it’s probably not so much whether Skype will work during the entire trip, but whether Campbell will be able to last the voyage without going insane. gadget zone hopes she doesn’t suffer from motion sickness.

For those of you living under a rock, Skype is free software that allows you to make calls pretty much world wide using the Internet. Calls from your PC to another PC are free, no matter where you are and where your call recipient is (not including your Internet fee of course) and for small fees you can now call landlines and mobiles around the world using Skype.

Do you use Skype or have been given it a try? Love or hate it, let us know in the forums
