Overnightly: Toshiba, Intel, Apple, Live Search and plenty more

By Damian Francis, 7/3/2008 7:43:57 AM

Goodmorning! Welcome to the second dose of overnightly. It tastes pretty sweet already so you won’t have to add any sugar, unless the likes of Apple, Sony, Microsoft, Nine, Toshiba and Nikon leave a bitter taste in your mouth. If all of them do what are you doing reading a consumer technology website?

Sony go wireless
Gizmodo US is reporting that president and chief operating officer of Sony, Stan Glasgow, has stated that by 2010 90 percent of all their products will be networked. He mentioned that Sony would be working on in-house software to make this happen, and that the Vaio would lead the way.

When you think about it, the majority of Sony’s product categories have wireless offerings already, from their laptops and walkmans to their cameras and even HiFi systems. While it will still require a significant effort on Sony’s part to hit their 90 percent target, they are certainly off to an impressive start.

Toshiba make their next move
Fresh off their defeat in the HD wars, Toshiba have come bouncing back with a new product.  Rather than going to Blu-ray it is rumoured that Toshiba will produce up-scaling DVD players that are internet enabled. These rumours are based on the fact that Toshiba have just okayed, through the Toshiba chaired DVD Forum, the ‘DVD Download DL’ logo.

TG Daily has speculated that Toshiba will use the Spurs Engine 1000 processor for up sampling. While it may seem like a strange idea, Blu-ray still hasn’t entirely taken off and Blu-ray discs are still rather expensive. If Toshiba are able to produce the player at speed, there may still be a decent sized market left for them.

We reported in yesterday’s Overnightly that the Nikon D700 had been announced in the States. Well, praise be, it has now been officially announced for Australia as well. Nikon states that the performance of D700 is comparable to that of the D3, and even features the D-SLR FX format first introduced by the D3.
Below is a snippet of the D700 specs found in Nikon’s press release.
