WKND Tech: The iMac turns 10
By Damian Francis, 18/8/2008 8:01:58

The iMac turned 10 recently and to celebrate, Apple did, well, nothing. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate for them. When the ‘I’ key on our Macbook departed, we moved back to the old original iMac we have and started to bang out the best WKND Tech story we ever have. Eventually we decided it wasn’t the best because nothing much happened, but it was close regardless.

HP head to netbooks via VIA
Rumours have surfaced that HP will continue producing netbooks that are powered by VIA processors. The rumour is that HP have ordered a bunch of Nano processors from VIA to replace the ageing C7-M batch that made it into the 2133 Mini Note. It was initially thought that HP would move to the Intel Atom but it now seems they will stick with the small processor company who’s best days were thought to be behind them. With a deal like this on the table VIA have certainly pulled off a good deal.

The iMac is now 10
On August 15, 1998, Apple shipped their very first iMac. Little did they know the line would be one of the corner stones of the Apple resurgence. It was the first major product Apple released after Steve Job retook the helm of what was a sinking ship. The first iMac was a much needed success for Apple. In 1997 they had posted a US$878 million loss, but by the end of 1998, they had turned a US$414 million profit. Since the original iMac the line has gone through three significant upgrades, each one redefining desktop computer design and continuing to turn good profits for the Cupertino based company.

Palm Treo Pro revealed
The Palm Treo Pro has been outed, but not officially. Following the success of the budget Palm Centro, the Palm Treo Pro has been eagerly awaited. It’s even more eagerly awaited because this is the first Palm product since former Apple man Jon Rubenstein joined the company. But wait no more, because community members at WMExperts have leaked some photos.

Expected at the end of the year, the Treo Pro will feature worldwide HSDPA, 3G and will be powered by Windows Mobile 6.1. It will have a 400MHz processor and 128MB of memory.

Microsoft to offer Blu-ray support
It’s not with the Xbox 360, as many have hoped, but Microsoft will none-the-less offer native Blu-ray support with their operating systems.
