Official word on Windows 7 revealed
By Damian Francis, 15/8/2008 2:16:21

It’s now commonplace for different sectors and brands within Microsoft to have their own official blog. It’s a great way of connecting with the consumer and allowing them to have their question answered directly by the development team. gadget zone predicts there’s going to be a lot of feedback flooding on to the Windows 7 official blog.

Microsoft’s Windows 7 blog, titled ‘Egineering Windows 7’, is now live with the first post up for the world to read. Senior managers on Windows 7, Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky, will be taking the reins of the blog. With Windows 7 looking set for release in late 2009, consumers will be able to follow the operating systems progress from the eyes of the development team.

In their first post DeVaan and Sinofsky wrote, “With this blog we’re opening up a two-way discussion about how we are making Windows 7. Windows has all the challenges of every large scale software project—picking features, designing them, developing them, and delivering them with high quality. Windows has an added challenge of doing so for an extraordinarily diverse set of customers.”

According to the blog, since the release of Windows Vista, there has been 18 months worth of work on creating Windows 7. That would mean that by the end of 2009, there would only have been 30 odd months of work on the product. It’s a short turn around time by Microsoft’s standards, but if they have learnt anything recently, it’s that continually delaying a product (Windows Vista) can seriously effect the products reputation.

In fact, the blog went as far as to say that, “Related to disclosure is the idea of how we make sure not to set expectations around the release that end up disappointing you—features that don’t make it, claims that don’t stick, or support we don’t provide. Starting from the first days of developing Windows 7, we have committed as a team to “promise and deliver”. That’s our goal—share with you what we’re going to get done, why we’re doing it, and deliver it with high quality and on time.”

So no more release date delays then and missing features? Lets hope so.

I think you should actually support this OS, test it out in the beginning, make it compatible with programs, and heck why not, create an internet security software that comes with the OS. Since you are the creators of the OS, you should know it the best, right? Make it more work-friendly, stuff it with alot of programs, new fun useless innovations and just make it good k? Since vista was such a blow (my computer has broken down 3 times and it has Vista), please, for us all, make a GOOD OS for once. (I am not counting in XP :))

We're not actually the creators of the OS, unless I am misreading your post. But you can check out the offical blog with the link on the second page of the story. You make some good points in your post. Possibly a good idea to post that on the official blog.

This blog is a farse. The OS is designed already, only a baby step up from Vista. It uses all of Vista's drivers, etc because it is Vista, just a little revamped. The cheapest way for M$ to continue strangling the industry on innovation while meeting their bottom line.

Don't make Windows 7 such a resource hog. I have 4 GB of RAM in my notebook and when Vista Ultimate boots up, before I even do anything it's eating up 40% of my RAM. Also I don't like the way Vista organizes files and displays them. When in Windows Explorer I Want to see folders medium sized but when opening a file from a dialog box I Want to see a list not medium folders again. XP does this and so should Windows 7.

Is Vista really 'that' bad, I've been too scared to upgrade from XP due to all the bad publicity. I'm even thinking it will be safer to switch to Mac next time.

Am very sure Microsoft has learned a great deal about the issues with Window Vista. I believe Window 7 will be the operating system that Window Vista failed to be. I hope Microsoft take the time and perfect Window 7, because Mac and Linux are serious competitors.
