The world as my office

As a freelance writer, I get a lot of freedom with how and when I do work. I can wake up at 6am or noon, wear pajamas all day if I want to, and even nick off to the beach if I’m still nursing a hangover from the weekend and don’t feel particularly inspired to do any work.
But what I haven’t properly explored yet is the option of working outside of home, something that mobile technology and the Internet really gives us the luxury to do. Occasionally I’ll catch up on a bit of email while I’m eating lunch or read some of my RSS feeds through Google Reader while on the bus or train, but I’ve never tried doing a solid stretch of work in public locations like a café or park bench.
I live in a tiny wannabe one-bedroom flat, so the idea of having “the world as my office” is very appealing, and the best thing is that I have more than enough tech at my disposal to be able to pull it off. What fun is a mobile phone, laptop, portable media player etc (and more than one of each, in my case) when you’re mostly using it all at home, right?
So I’ve decided that, as of this week, I’m going to spend at least 10 hours working outdoors. I’ll be haunting all of the local Wi-Fi-enabled cafes, bookshops, libraries and parks seeking Internet access, but I’ll also bring my own using my (exorbitantly-priced) mobile data plan through Telstra.
I’ll also be experimenting with the tech that I bring with me each time. My black MacBook is my preferred mobile workstation, and only weighs 2.27kg, which is manageable as long as I don’t stuff my backpack with too much other stuff (which I’ve got a very bad habit of doing!). This has enough juice for around three hours, but I’ve also got a
Battery Geek Portable Power Station
(something I bought awhile ago for international flights but have never actually gotten around to using) that can keep the MacBook going for another 7-9 hours. Phwoar!
On the mobile front, I’ll be bringing my iPhone (calls + entertainment) and Hiptop Slide (unlimited free SMS, MMS, email, Web browsing and IM – perfect for when I don’t have Internet access).
I’ve also got other devices that I’m keen to try.

Great blog... and Nic, best tagline EVER (mainly because it's true). gadget zoners, I kid, our managing editor goes to extreme measures to uphold the journalistic integrity this site demands from its writers, like not drinking on weekdays.
