Five things I dislike about the iPhone

By Jenneth Orantia, 3/7/2008 3:48:03 PM

As I mentioned in my last post, I'm now the proud owner of a 16GB Apple iPhone. I've been wanting one of these babies from the first day that His Royal Jobness announced them, so when I had a little bit of "spare" cash last week, I thought I'd give myself a long overdue Christmas/birthday/good-on-ya-for-lasting-another-year present and buy an iPhone off eBay.

Oh, I tell ya, those first few moments with the iPhone were electric. Holding it in my hand and admiring its sleek body, rounded curves and incredibly bright display, caressing the touchscreen with my fingers and soaking up all the user interface eye candy. What an experience.

Nearly a week on, and most of the magic has worn off. I still enjoy using it, but after awhile all the slick screen transitions and translucent dialogue boxes - even the cool cover flow feature, where you can browse through your albums by flicking through the album art with your fingertip - became, well, ordinary.

Now, I'm hardly a "regular" mobile phone user, so many of my criticisms about the iPhone may not be applicable to you. I'm not going to cover the obvious weaknesses that everyone knows about like the lack of 3G or the non-replaceable battery; instead, I’m going to offer some observations after using the iPhone as my main mobile for a solid six days.

1. I don't like its shape. Sure, it looks pretty, but it's impractical. The sides are slippery and it doesn't "hug" my hand the way other phones do. I'm almost positive that it's going to fall from my hand onto the rock-hard pavement sometime soon, and that'll be a sad, sad day indeed.

2. I tend to write a lot of short notes to myself on my mobile, and I have to say that since I've started using the iPhone, I hardly write them anymore. The reason being? I don't like using the software keyboard. Yes, it's got a great auto-correct feature, and as far as software keyboards go it's probably the best of its kind. But I still find myself constantly having to correct mistakes, and it's slow to use.

3. I wish it had hardware media playback keys.

1. Get a cover for it, it will make a HUGE difference. I dropped mine a few days ago, it make a thunk but it is flash based so it shouldn't matter as much as a drive based item. I hope.... 2. Agreed, it is a pain in the butt, perhaps a stylus would help? 3. You can double tap Home when it is locked to bring up the Play, Next/Prev buttons. 4. Agreed, this is why cracking it is a MUST. 3rd party apps FTW. 5. Haven't gotten any so can't comment, needless to say it would suck finding things like that. I like it so far, too bad it is only 2.5 Gen :(

zoidfromthevoid: yeah, rabid consumer, that's me. I tell myself that I HAVE to buy all this stuff for work... iamthemaxx: yeah, looking for a cover for it now. Styluses do not work on the iPhone - it'll only register pressure from your fingertips. Even fingernails don't work. I know about the double clicking the Home button - but you still have to take the iPhone out to know where you have to tap on the screen for the Play, Next/Prev buttons.
