Simply elegant

Products that do everything always seem to have one thing in common. They don’t do anything well. It’s the simplest products that are the most effective, but still not everyone has caught on to this.

I’m tired of being promised one product that will do a hell of a lot of things. If it does indeed do everything it does nothing well, and half the things it does do you don’t need. There are some breakthrough products on the market at the moment though, and they all have one thing in common – they do one thing and they do it damn well! Here’s a small list of my top products.

1)    Apple iPod Classic. The iPhone may be all the rage but this little battler just keeps on keeping on. It’s a simple design, is durable and plays music damn well (dodgy earphones aside). No matter how many times they update the iPod Classic it is always elegantly simple and a breeze to use. Sure, it ruins your taste in music, but that’s a small price to pay for brilliant design.

2)    Nintendo DS Lite. Yes, the sound and graphics aren’t five star, but it’s damn fun, and the stylus is pure genius. Unlike the PSP, the DS doesn’t get confused by playing movies, music and whatever else. It plays games. Good, fun, wholesome games and it does it well. Wireless multiplayer, awesome!

3)    Airbus A380. An odd inclusion perhaps but you can buy it (if you’re a Saudi prince). While everyone else has their eye on supersonic planes like the A2, Airbus has come out and delivered one bloody big passenger jet. The idea was simple: make it bigger, quieter and more environmentally friendly. Sure, it was late but it delivers on all its promises.

4)    Apple iMac. Does the computer get any simpler than this? It’s sleek, looks good and works! Plus you get all the software you’ll ever need (almost) included. It doesn’t promise to be anything other than a good, solid, computer.

5)    Nintendo Wii. The DS concept brought to the lounge room. Simple, fun, easy.

Yes, I have to agree with this sentiment. I probably use about one tenth of the features available on my mobile phone. I have a digital camera which does what I want it to, and well. I have an old iPod shuffle which plays my mp3's well and my phone sends & receives texts and calls. I have just read virul's blog, and he states that his Kenwood player just plays music, and does it well. Maybe, in 10 or so years, there will be one unit to rule them all, which does everything very well, but until then I'm not afraid to own separate gadgets.

er . . does this make me lo-tech, or anti-convergence?

Makes you just like me! I do enjoy playing with do-it-all gadgets, and am impressed by some. But probably would not purchase one right at this moment. I too prefer to go for single units.
